Waterford city is situed in south eastern Ireland, on the river Suir about seventeen miles from where the river enters the sea. Practically the entire city is built on the south bank of the river. Waterford is Ireland's oldest city and was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. It was taken over by the Anglo-Norman invaders of the 12th century and was one of the most important old English entres in medieval Ireland. Since then it has seen sieges, invasions famine and economic highs and lows. It remains the foremost city in Ireland's south-east
